The ambulance crew in Scotland, SD, embodies the very best of rural emergency care. With every patient they bring through our doors, they demonstrate exceptional teamwork, compassion, and professionalism. Their clear communication and calming presence make a meaningful difference for the patients receiving care and the hospital staff who partner with them during critical moments.

Scotland has experienced several significant and emotional events in recent years—including an active-shooter situation, devastating vehicle accidents, and traumatic injuries from falls. In a close-knit town like ours, EMS personnel are often caring for people they know personally: neighbors, classmates, and family members. Their courage, steadiness, and heart during these moments have strengthened our entire community.

Their dedication extends far beyond emergency calls. The crew generously supports community preparedness by allowing the hospital’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator to use their CPR manikins and AED testing devices to teach lifesaving skills to local students and teachers. Stop the Bleed training is provided to students and teachers, emphasizing the time, sacrifice, and commitment it takes for EMS personnel to drop everything—often in the middle of their own lives—to help save someone else’s.

Scotland EMS serves as positive role models, supports youth engagement, and shows the next generation what dedicated rural service truly looks like. Scotland is truly fortunate to have an EMS team that leads with skill, heart, and unwavering dedication to our community.
