SDFMC History
The South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC) has served the health care community in South Dakota as a federally designated Peer Review Organization and Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) since 1973. Currently, SDFMC is the designated QIO-Like Entity for South Dakota and continues to perform medical case review for South Dakota Medicaid patients.
As the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) efforts to improve quality of health care to Medicare enrollees transitioned in 2014, SDFMC aligned with the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, Great Plains Quality Innovation Network (QIN) – Nebraska (previously CIMRO of Nebraska) and Quality Health Associates of North Dakota to form the Great Plains QIN.

Great Plains QIN was awarded the CMS contract to serve as the Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) for the states of Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota and South Dakota. Working together within a four-state network, each organization worked in conjunction with the state partners to improve care using a collective set of expertise, tools and resources to meet the needs of healthcare providers and Medicare beneficiaries across the Great Plains region. Great Plains QIN was awarded the Task Order 1 CMS contract to serve as the QIN-QIO for North Dakota and South Dakota from November 2019 through November 2024.
SDFMC has an established portfolio of government and private contracts aligning with our mission of collaborating with partners to improve health outcomes. The SDFMC team uses their expertise in community engagement, healthcare quality improvement, project management, strategic planning, and utilization review to improve the quality of life for South Dakotans.
