The South Dakota Project Firstline (SD PFL) Scavenger Hunt was featured as an innovative infection prevention training resource in a national partner spotlight by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The interactive game utilizes CDC PFL posters, a list of questions, and an answer key to engage staff in a search through their facility for answers to infection prevention questions.
This is the second year the SD PFL team has received national attention for their creative approaches to infection prevention training. Jess Danko, MSHA, RRT, LTC-CIP, program director for the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC) commented, “Creating interactive learning tools, such as the Infection Control Scavenger Hunt, provides a fun and educational tool that can and has been widely utilized. National recognition from the CDC is a testament to the great work being done in South Dakota and shares best practices with PFL teams from across the nation for offering fun options for infection prevention training.”

Since the launch of the Scavenger Hunt in 2022, there have been over 50 South Dakota healthcare facilities who have participated in the activity. “The Scavenger Hunt can be completed by a group of coworkers or by an individual. It’s a great way to boost infection control knowledge and promote teamwork.”
Completing the Scavenger Hunt incorporates reading, writing, movement, and engagement, which leaves a stronger impression and improves knowledge retention. Additional infection prevention training and resources are available on the SD PFL website.
